#24 Cathay Restaurant: A Renovated Gem in Nanjing's Old Town

Preserving History and Embracing Innovation

When abandoned factories and warehouses in Nanjing's Western Old Town were left unused, designer Jaco Pan saw an opportunity to transform one of these historical spaces into a unique dining experience. The result is #24 Cathay Restaurant, a renovated gem that seamlessly blends the old and the new.

This two-storey restaurant, located in a former mint during China's National Revolution, pays homage to the industrial architecture of the past while embracing modern technology and design. The project, led by designer Jaco Pan and his team, aimed to create a space that not only showcases the local cuisine but also provides an immersive and interactive dining experience.

The main entrance of #24 Cathay Restaurant opens up to the bustling street, inviting guests into a world of culinary delights. The reception desk guides visitors further into the restaurant, where they are greeted by twinkling lights that create a dynamic and enchanting atmosphere. The architect's vision was to integrate the dining and cooking areas, allowing for close interaction and coordination between the chefs and the clients.

One of the challenges faced during the renovation was the lack of original drawings and necessary repairs. However, the team managed to redesign the façade and entrances, preserving the integrity of the structure while giving it a fresh and modern look. The interiors were designed to complement the industrial aesthetic of the building, using materials such as marbles, textured wood, and transparent fabric to soften the space and create a warm and inviting ambiance.

Lighting played a crucial role in the design, with windows on the red brick walls strategically arranged to introduce natural light into the interior. Transparent surfaces made of rice paper were used to diffuse and solidify the lighting, reducing uneven shadows and balancing the inherent coldness of the concrete construction. The result is a harmonious blend of colors, textures, and lighting that enhances the overall dining experience.

#24 Cathay Restaurant is not just a place to enjoy a meal; it is an immersive journey through history and culture. The unique design and interactive dining spaces make guests feel like they are part of the restaurant, creating a memorable experience that goes beyond the food itself.

The project, which started in 2017 and was completed in March 2018, has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating best practices and competent technical characteristics.

With #24 Cathay Restaurant, Jaco Pan has successfully transformed a historical space into a modern dining destination that celebrates the past while embracing the future. It is a testament to the power of design to create unique and immersive experiences that leave a lasting impression.
